“From Baja With Love” Art Exposition

From January 21 to February 19, 2012, world artist Scott Kennedy will exhibit more than two dozen watercolors, oil paintings and ink drawings of Baja life and landscapes in the Galería Ernesto Muñoz Acosta of Ensenada’s Centro Estatal de las Artes (CEARTE). Created mainly between 2005 and 2012, Scott’s works are truly art from his heart and depict his visual chronicles of man-made or natural scenes and settings in Ensenada, Punta Banda, Santo Tomás, San Felipe and other locales and venues in the State of Baja California as well as a few in the sister state of Baja California Sur.
Scott’s inaugural reception at CEARTE on January 21 at 7:30 p.m. will be a shared event with prominent Ensenada ceramicist Josefina Pedrín, who will exhibit her works in the lobby. The public is invited to join the opening night festivities.
Currently a resident of Ensenada, Scott (www.ScottKennedy.com) was raised in Newport Beach, California, where he began to sell his drawings and paintings of the local waterfront while in his teens. At age 20, he studied art at Mexico’s Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende.
At 21, Scott traveled to Denmark and ended up spending a decade sailing and painting its waterways, along with those of Germany and Holland. Returning to California, Scott chronicled America’s Cup races on location in San Diego and Western Australia, and became the official artist of the famous Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race for 15 years.
Through the years Scott’s works have been sold to private collectors and also exhibited in museums and galleries in various corners of the world including Europe, Australia, Canada, the United States, and mainland Mexico. In Baja, Scott has exhibited at Cantamar’s Joanna Jones Gallery and Punta Banda’s Casa de Arte as well as events like the Rosarito Art Fest, La Casa Vieja Spring Festival, La Bufadora Art Show and San Felipe Blues & Arts Festival.
Scott is excited and honored by the invitation to present his newest body of work, “From Baja With Love (De Baja Con Amor)” at CEARTE, the prestigious State Center of the Arts in Ensenada.
“I find myself at home in Baja California and still entranced,” he states. “The profound beauty of nature in this wild peninsula, the people, the traditions and the grace of everyday life feed me what I need to create the art that I do. In short, I fell in love with Baja – her land, her people and her freedom – much like one falls in love with a beautiful woman. Her flaws are overshadowed by her beauty- and those everyday scenes take on a special glow when I am with her. Her transgressions are forgiven as she captures my imagination and reveals herself to me.
“I believe this small grouping of recent work is only the first sentence of a very long love letter that she and I write together… From Baja With Love,” Scott concludes.

After a whole year of preparation and painting what Baja has best to offer me, I am ready to show her off!
A collection of oils and watercolor and ink drawings representing the rhythm, the customs and incomparable scenery of Northern Baja will be exposed in the Sala Munoz at the CEARTE museum in Ensenada, B.C. Mexico. Opening night is the 21st of January 2012. It is an honor to have been invited in such an elegant Museum of Art.

Finishing a masterpiece

I live in a place where the wind blows from the sea and the desert in the same day on a peninsula way out into the pacific ocean. Dust is always present. To keep my watercolor paper clean is difficult and can be cleaned regularly by my erasers.
I am working on a large water color. This has been a work in progress for about nine months. It is a highly detailed portrait of nearly fifty well known political figures and others like Michael Moore, Larry Flint, Garrison Keillor, Bonnie Raitt and Joan Baez to name a few.
I had done a similar arrangement of people within the old Hussongs Cantina of Ensenada ,BCN. The latter inspired my client to commission this larger piece. The Hussongs piece took over a year to paint completely on location. My Sunday night visits allowed me to depict a real local crowd carrying on until the morning hours. This piece I hold dear to my personal collection.

This new piece will be finished within days or a week or so. I work tirelessly and like so many of my more accomplished works it is beyond my conception of how much time it takes to do these "major works"
Hours of precision and attentiveness deserves physical breaks. I leave the studio to go outdoors in the elements and to fulfill some of my construction projects.
This weekend will be a drive north to Long Beach Yacht Club to be part of the Ullman Inshore regatta series. My original work for these races is shown on an earlier blog. Prints will be gifted to race winners and various Yacht clubs as trophy pieces.
I love this work and the great people I am involved with.I am everyday in awe of this wonderful life and avocation.I give Marie-Pierre, my wife such thanks for being by my side.

Hey ther bloggers in blog land! it has been a beautiful day on the north west coast of baja california today!sunshine and a little wind and puffy white clouds.This morning.
I had great aspirations to getting some work done but they fizzled away quickly.
Besides its sunday and oh yeah its fathers day too!
so we walked to gordos to watch the brazil vs ivory coast soccer game and relax,talk to friends at the local pub and go for a stroll with the dogs on the beach.
In my book,that beats any neurotic striving to get ahead and show something for the days toil!
Hapiness is when you give yourself permission!

So now I am working on my new book again.I am excited now to see the result in print of many years works of art.
I have scribbled texts for some of the drawings and paintings and they are being edited by a dear friend Sarah Kuchelmeister.Sarah has a monumental job as I give her my broken fragments of half English and half German sentance structures.She has given me new hope in adding texts to the pages completing the story of where how and why I did some of the images.So really this is quite encouraging.Now to finish it!
While Marie-Pierre and I were in New York last month we met with R.Russell Jinishian,among other topics of conversation and business,I asked him to consider adding something to the new book.He said he would be pleased to do a forward in the book.He had several good suggestions and it was very good to have lunch with him and catch up on all the other artists and his displays and publishings.www.jrusselljinishiangallery.com
Two of my friends are telling me about their new books and getting me even more thirsty to see my own results. Now back to my work in the studio.I have lots to do.

Going to San DIiego!

Marie-Pierre and I went to San Diego yesterday.I love the Hotel Del Coronado fom my earliest San Diego memories,we met my client and his lovely wife there.I enjoyed finally meeting him after so many emails and phone calls back and forth to get the painting done right.I was able to sit by the pool there and put in the final touches in the lower areas identifying the race and sponsors.
Meanwhile my client and his wife were scurrying around to help make sure the little children in the pool nearby would not get any splashes on the painting,it was nice and it was alot of care that they took and kind of funny for us all at the same time. We could have gone somewhere else I suppose but seeing my own body guards back and forth in front and around making sure it was all ok, was humorous and endearing. There was one tiniest little girl with water wings having the time of her life.
We had gigantic airplanes flying directly over us coming into North Island air base.They were huge jet bombers. like F-18s or something.
Just cannot imagine staying in a hotel resort for more than a few minutes or hour or so,little alone overnight with all that noise.Guess I am spoiled living in quietude.
We had also come up for Marie-Pierres nieces' graduation party,but it turned out to be the next day!Oh well.So we went to the Dog park to let the two pooches stretch their patient legs. They had so much fun! Living in Baja we do not get many doggy parks like they have in the USA.
Turns out we meet several old friends and had the most bonding conversations.
We went to trader Joes and then returned happily to our own bed in Baja.

Ullman inshore races

On my way east while stopping in Denver I was congratulated by phone message. I was chosen to do the official art for the new poster for the Ullman inshore series of races hosted by several southern California yacht clubs. I began blearily on the plane to sketch a series of drawings to get a feel of action and compositions. I worked on several sketches and sent them off as samples.

In Times square I was thinking about the drawings; in the French restaurant on Park Avenue while enjoying the ten inlaws, I am staring blankly at the wall on a possible slant to this mast or a boom that would improve the composition. OOPs! Hello I am back!! sorry about my lack of attention, I cannot speak French anyway so what really does it matter? Great wine eh?? Oh the FOOD!!!

I have made a 22 by 30 inch watercolor and ink painting. I will try to show it here on my blog.

I was speaking to my cousin back east on the phone yesterday. She quoted my Aunt who is 101 years old now. I saw her a week ago while on a trip back East. She said : Love the fact that there is no where to stop. We grow! It was a great reminder of what is. This piece is nothing compared to the work I did in the seventees. Or is it, I ask, is it a development or a regression? No, it is growth.

I think I must be very old fashion in a lot of ways in my work. I am very concerned and do not think about reputation in the midst of it. It has nothing to do with any of my past or present work. It is about the now! and this is like crisis!...WHAT TO DO WITH THIS? The panic has to subside and I must just get to work.This is like an old friend and we know each other so well we have joked and laughed and got over the circumstances and started working with color and design. Just get down and explore the next turn of the wave.

Well it was a congenial night at Los Gordos and now must turn in so I can get up and travel to meet with my client in Coronado Yacht Club in the morning.

What a new experience to remember!
I went yellow tail fishing in a panga (mexican open boat of nineteen feet or so)
I had no expectations! We met at five thirty in the morning at La Jolla beach where we departed into the middle of Todos Santos bay.It was chilly and just getting light. Jay Johnson and Beto the guide are very experienced in fishing here,but me,I would easily call myself a real greenhorn. They handed me a rod and reel with an aluminum jig out of a selection of twelve poles that Jay brought.
Jay was in the middle and I was up front in the bow.I had a great view as the panga ran at a fast clip to where we would begin casting our lines.
Jay made me aware of Betos face and eyes as he scanned the horizon.I became entranced by the other worldly gaze that reminds me of real hunting animals.The senses are used in a way that employs the whole internal and external and something beyond the body.
Anyway, as we stopped and cast,believe me,I have not cast a line since I caught a Dorado off the sailboat halfway between Kauai and San Diego in 1969.
The first cast into a boil of fish I brought in a good sized Barracuda. Well... good sized it was not, because Beto returned him to the sea.The next strike was bigger and then more and more bigger ones and were keepers. Beto and Jay were catching. We caught a dozen keepers and some came off the lures automatically.
I then see Betos' pole bend like a I have never seen poles bend and then he brings in this huge Yellow tail. Then Jay gets a huge one then I get one and then the second and its all happening so quickly as the feverish swarm and boil of fish in the water gives us hook ups.
I was astounded!We went on to other areas of the sea within Todos Santos Island.
Again and again we would get hits and bring them in.I had heard of Beto before from locals that he had the magic touch.The two of them are written about in the book by Tom Gatch called Hooked on Baja.I Illustrated the book by the way.
With good equipment and good local knowledge I see know the success and wonder of fishing and how it can really captivate one,not only for the hook ups but the beautiful surrounding of the sea and views of the shore never experienced by most people,but the acmmaraderie as well.
Now we are going to partake in eating some of the finest fish both the Barracuda and the luscious sashimi of Yellow tale.

Sunday ,all Mothers day

Even though we went to the beach brunch, I wanted to go home and back to bed because of my allergy with my swelled and itching face.
I am not a person who likes crowds or having to yell to be heard. I started to think about the mother that once lived in my life which is now gone. I am thankful for the crazy adventures and her enthusiasm about my art work when I was only a young teenager.I think in everyones life, whether or not mom was an easy or hard person to live with.She, atleast she could be the closest person we may ever have in life.
I probably get the biggest laughs about her when I talk with my sister about some of the stuff we did together.
I moved large and heavy stones into place where I am raising the level of the yard by the stones mass. This makes like a large mosaic of differing stone types and shapes.
I go back and forth to my paintings, giving me exercise and fresh air while I can ponder my painting and come back with freshness.
The whales were going past today and I think I saw a great blue whale spouting,the grey whales are on their way north to the waters off Alaska with their newborn calves.

So beautiful day it has been in Baja Norte! I am finishing a study for my mother in law Yvette, it is of a castle in France where she took us. Acually it is more than a castle, it is a grounds of a monastery,nunnery and later farming /spiritual commune and great cathedreal having been put there by Elinor d' Aquitane, around the years eleven hundred. She also was a great uniter and played with the role of queen of both nations at the time,England and France. She went on the crusades to the holy land with her french hubby where she apparently met her hubby to be.
Lots of history to say the least,also her son Richard the lion heart has his sarcophagus next to his mothers there on the floor of the cathedral.I did the finished large oil painting for a client a few years ago and never finished the study until now.My client is proud of his oil painting and when I go there,I love to show the piece off. I take people to see my others as well,the portrait of my client, his wife and President Clinton, then on to the piece I made of and for Lee Iaccoca who I met and talked with. I was talking to Jerry Brown who was past and possibly future governor of California last week. I am doing a large water color with him in it as well as about forty other people of note.
This has been a very intersting learning experience and now since five years I have many portraits practice I feel I can tackle the (Log from the sea of Cortez )paintings with more skill.

I worked on my new book today with Carlos in Ensenada.He is helping me do the design and with the images and the texts that belong with each page.
I finally have as many images as I need to do the book and there are about one hundred.These are a combination of watercolors,ink drawings and oil paintings spanning over forty five years of doing work in and around Newport Beach,California.Many of them have been in print and sold through the publication and all of the originals have long been sold.I managed to be able to save them either through films or originals getting photos done of them recently,or from old black and white negatives of my line drawings.
Having never published an art book before,this has been a long and exploratory mission for me.
There is alot of memories as well as places and things I have painted in Orange County that no longer exist but in our memories and old photos and now this will be a reminder through my paintings and drawings.
I still see many things there that could be nice to paint and should not be left out of a kind of story book through paintings of that area but alas there is just so much time and now I have a full plate with what I am doing in Baja California.Wow,after years of preparation for this and the decades of artwork it will be exciting to see the finished book.I want to go paint outside on these summer like days and get the great feedback from the images that speak to me.

I love living in Baja,I love living in Mexico, so I paint here, I breath and eat well and get healthy here. I work up alot of stress when I create, I want everything to go into what I do. There is alot of consideration with compositions and all the other options with color light contrasts reflections shapes and then the correctness of what your representation is. I am working on many pieces of watercolors and oils at the same time.Focus with baja and a theme of what is and will never be again.
Many of these will twine together with the historic voyage made by marine biologist Ed Ricketts and his buddy John Steinbeck in nineteen forty aboard the Western Flyer , a pacific northwest purse seiner.That is an integral and grounding piece for Baja's history in my work.Separately and long before this story came into my life,I did many drawings down the peninsula and many were published from those back in the late sixties and early seventies.I work on that basis still, doing things that strike me as aesthetic and have value to us as people to have the memories to go with them and ponder and to save on our walls for an added value to our lives,and relative to our surroundings. I hope to show in the near future more of this works in pubications and exhibits.

my second day blogging .A little intimidated by the scope of the whole thing,its not exactly like I was just writing in my journal sketch book which may be dug up a thousand years from now and the archaeologists say hey here is human doing that writing thing on paper.Blogging is similar to me as embarking on a new canvas or paper with the first stroke.It is kind of nice to be able to get to take up writing again as i had for many times while travlleing where I get most of my writing and thinking done.By blogging I may resume that rythem again.I had been working on a painting for eight months now and it is eighty percent done. I would close my eyes and see the faces in the piece in my minds eye.I was ready for a break and my client to take it for some weeks to show it off. There is never a time other than this excepttion to show the work I do unfinishedOk now its time gor bed again,last night I slept twelve hours I hope I do not do that again tonight.

I decided to break into a blog to go directly against my aversions to the computer and so called wasting time while the sun shines.
My learning disabilities as a youth were a direct result of my aversion to schools in general and following the teacher and the rules and the order of things. I could secretly relieve myself of some of that pressure by bringing along a mad magazine to school and then copying some Don Martin and Sergio Aragones characters.
This was probably the start of a lifelong tendency for drawing and painting and keeping the order of the world in a manageable way for me.
Of course through art I then could cooperate peacefully and begin learning other things comprehensively.
So I guess dealing with your demons is also applicable in my case with computers.
Learning and sharing seems as a very important part of life for me and therefore a blog is started.
